About Khiva
Bukhara was once a large commercial centre on the Great Silk Road

Fairy-tale city Khiva has managed to retain its exotic image of an Oriental town in the older part of the city called Ichan-Kala. Ichan-Kala is a place where all the monuments of architecture are located.
As an "open museum", Khiva is about 2.000 years old. Here you will find the Pakhlavan Makhmud mausoleum (1835), the Mukhammad Aminkhan madrasah (1855), the Palace Ensemble Kunya-Ark Tash Khovli (1841), and the caravanserai of Allakulikhan (1855). Actually, Khiva is made up of madrasahs, mosques and minarets such as the tall and beautiful Islam-Khodja minaret, plus having the most number of minarets in Asia, the most remarkable being the Kalta-Minor minaret (1835) and it is still standing. The Djuma Mosque which has an amazingly 218 ornate carved wooden columns is another of the main attractions.
Ichan-Qala
The main entrance to the Ichan-Qala is the twin-turreted brick Ota Darvaza "Father Gate". The picturesque 2.5 km long mud walls date from the 18 century, rebuilt after being wrecked by the Persians. The walls also have North, East and South gates, respectively Bukhara Gate, Polvon Gate, Stone Gate, as well about 40 basins.
Muhammad Amin Khan Madrassah and Kalta Minor.
The first building on the right, inside the west gate is the Muhammad Amin Khan madrasah, built in the 1850. Outside stands the fat, turquoise-tiled Kalta Minaret, at the same time and looking like it was originally meant to far taller, which would have made higher than Buhara's Kalyan Minaret. Stories say it was stopped either because the architect or the Khan died.
